WJSHS Will Be Participating in the Colorado Healthy Kids Survey

    Dear Parent or Guardian:

Please sign and return the google form by December 1, 2025 if you do NOT want your child to participate. If you would like your student to participate, you do not need to submit this form.

This fall our students will take the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS), an important survey about student health. The survey asks students about health topics including unintentional injuries and violence; mental health; school safety; substance use; physical activity and nutrition; sexual behavior (optional); and risk and protective factors.

Your child is in a class that has been chosen to take this anonymous survey. Students do not have to take the survey. The survey takes no longer than thirty minutes to complete. The survey process protects your student’s privacy, and no information is collected that can identify an individual student. Only your child will know how they answer. Students do not get school credit for taking the survey, and there is no penalty for not taking the survey.

The survey results will help your school, community groups, and state health agencies to plan programs and services for youth. The survey is supported by the Colorado Departments of Public Health & Environment, Education, Public Safety, the Behavioral Health Administration, and the Attorney General’s Office, and is administered by the Colorado School of Public Health every other year. This project has been approved by your school district and the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board (COMIRB). This survey is being administered to middle and high school students, NOT elementary.

Students receive the survey during class time and are instructed to answer the questions or skip any question they don’t understand or don’t feel comfortable answering. Students who are not completing the survey do other schoolwork during the survey time. We encourage you to discuss the survey with your child and share your views on their choice to participate.

For more information about the study, please visit our website at http://www.healthykidscolo.org or call the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Director, Dr. Ashley Brooks-Russell, at 303-724-8437. For questions regarding IRB approval, please contact COMIRB at 303-724-1055.

Walsenburg Jr Sr High School 7th and 8th Grade Cohorts

    September 24th, 2025

Dear Parents and Guardians of 7th and 8th Grade Students,

We are writing to share an important update regarding the organization of our junior high cohorts at the start of the second quarter.

Due to the small number of 7th grade students and the outstanding academic effort, behavior, and work ethic they have consistently demonstrated, we are placing all of our 7th graders into one cohort. This change recognizes their strengths and allows us to continue supporting them together as a group.

At the same time, in order to best meet the needs of our 8th grade students, we have decided to divide them into three cohorts. This will create smaller class sizes and allow us to provide more focused support for their academic and behavioral growth.

Please note that this adjustment does not change the courses students are enrolled in or the teachers they will have. The only difference will be the time of day they are with their assigned teachers. Specials classes, lunch, and all school activities will remain exactly the same.

We believe this is the most effective and efficient way to ensure every junior high student receives the attention, guidance, and encouragement they need to succeed.

As always, we value strong communication with our families. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your partnership and support in helping all of our students reach their fullest potential.

    Sincerely,

Joshua Vialpando Walsenburg Jr./Sr. High School
